The U.S. Trade Representative directed U.S. Customs to continue to block timber imports from a Peruvian exporter due to illegally harvested timber found in its supply chain. "We remain committed to trade and investment that accelerates economic growth and simultaneously protects the environment," said Ambassador Lighthizer.

Vietnam exported timber and wood products worth $8.38 billion in the first nine months of 2020, up 11.2% vs. one year ago. Shipments to the U.S. exceeded $4.19 billion in the first eight months of 2020, an increase of 27.4%.

The Woodstock Consortium, which represents nearly 60% of all EU production of birch plywood, has filed an antidumping complaint against Russia. The complaint presents evidence of a high level of dumping, ranging from 23% to 84%, from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020.

The U.S. Trade Representative initiated an investigation into Vietnam's trade practices on October 2. The USTR will look into two issues: how Vietnam has imported and used timber, which the USTR says was illegally harvested and traded, and whether Vietnam has undervalued its currency, making its products unfairly cheap abroad.
