Facing soaring U.S. lumber prices, U.S. importers are competing for - and winning - wood from Europe. The buying frenzy follows record American imports of forest products from Europe in 2020, when North American demand soared and caught sawmills off guard with low inventory. U.S. Home Builders Want New U.S.-Canada Softwood Deal; U.S. Mills Expand Capacity

Lumber costs for a new single-family home in the U.S. have tripled. Now, home builders are pushing the Biden administration for a new softwood deal with Canada. Under the current agreement, the U.S. imposes duties of nearly 9% on imports of most Canadian lumber.

U.S. lumber companies are continuing to expand capacity as wood prices reach record highs.
