Greenwashed Timber: Has Certification Failed?

A recent analysis by the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies reports that some sustainable forest certification has failed, citing examples involving the Forest Stewardship Council. Researchers say FSC has had little or no effect on tropical deforestation. Recent scandals involved FSC-certified loggers in Russia and Peru as well as an FSC-certified Austrian company in Romania. A Chinese supplier implicated in the Lumber Liquidators case held an FSC chain of custody certification.

DNA Used To Detect Illegal Timber

Dutch scientists are using a new method of DNA testing to identify illegally harvested timber. The refined test is precise enough to differentiate between trees cut in neighboring areas. This is essential as a specific location is needed to determine whether wood has been illegally logged. "We can accurately differentiate the origin of timber down to a 14-kilometer radius," says scientist Mart Vlam of Wageningen University.

Invasive Lanternfly Devastates Forests

The spotted lanternfly, a native of the Far East, was first spotted in Pennsylvania about 3 years ago in a shipment of stone from Asia. The lanternfly has surprised U.S. entomologists: It consumes a broader range of host plants than expected - including grapes, fruit trees, and hardwood trees - and reproduces more quickly. The insect has caused more damage in less time than any other invasive pest in the Mid-Atlantic region and has no known predators in North America.
