Answer: In the 1890s, George Vanderbilt recognized the need to preserve forestland while still making it profitable. He hired German forester Carl Schenck to develop a sustainable land management system: harvesting timber while reforesting and protecting the ecosystem for future generations. In 1898, Schenck founded the first U.S. forestry school.
